Forest Keeper

She slid through the woods, not wanting to disturb the birds during their afternoon nap. Suddenly, she jumped up into the low branches of an oak tree. She jumped from branch to branch until she stopped on the branch above her. A large raccoon was squeezing a small bird, which was struggling violently. The girl crept onto the branch with the raccoon and the bird. She  sprang  forward and grabbed the raccoon by the scruff of the neck and shook it with one hand until it let go of the bird. She caught the bird in her other hand and dropped the coon. It scuttled off, hissing at the girl. She stuck her tongue out at it, then said to no-one in particular, " And thats why I'm the guardian and peacekeeper of the forest. "  She gently put the bird down. Then she noticed something on the branch. It was a small, white and brown speckled egg with yolk spilling out of it. She gently scooped up the egg, closed her eyes and whispered,  "hetsa coot lay." I soared into the barn, wings flapping. I landed on top of a hay bale and began to prune my bright wings and back. I called out, '' Screech, screech." No answer. Annoyed (the General was always late), I ruffled my feathers. And then - froze . A mouse. It scuttled from under a hay bale, rubbing its whiskers. It moved forward, picked up a piece of corn and gnawed on it. I craned my head this way and that, waiting for the right second. Though before I could make a surprise attack, another mouse hurried out. I took aim at the first one and swoop. No!  My bright plumage gave me away. The first mouse scuttled to safety but the second mouse... I perched back on top of the hay bale. Pride soared inside me. I nibbled on the lifeless mouse and then hid it under a pile of hay.
